SONATINA
(for unaccompanied flute)
1999 • Estimated timing: 6'15"
I. Etude
II. Blues
III. Flight
[Published by Healing Eagle Music]
Sonatina is in three contrasting movements:
I. Etude – a juxtaposition of two opposing forces: the high, lyrical melody and the light, mechanical motive. As the movement progresses both phrases collapse on each other, first by the third, fourth, then fifth, and finally, the sixth. The contour of both phrases creates an X and finally ends opposite from where it started.
II. Blues – jazz influenced. Angular lines with a light, brisk middle section. ABA form.
III. Flight – The last movement is quick and vibrant. A rhythmic motive on a single pitch is contrasted with a flowing, beautiful melody. The form follows the standard sonata plan with the development section containing a synthesis of materials from the first and second movements. Disregarding the return of the opening key in the recapitulation, the work closes in C Major.
